So where to start on this special bike: it’s a 1979 suzuki GS850 shaft drive. I purchased it a good 10 years ago from a work mate who’s father had owned for at least the same amount of time. It came with spare everything and boxes of spare original parts, all of which you are welcome to have too including the optimiser.
The engine was seized so I needed a build plan. I started the basics myself but soon realised I needed a pro. As a Ducati owner I turned to my good friend and industry icon/guru; Alf at alpha motorcycles Worthing (he would be happy to discuss the project too if needed). I went down to speak to the legend and he agreed to take me and the bike project on. We soon decided I wanted to keep the originality of the engine and controls but with a spin of my own. So what did we do? Alf has done a complete nut and bolt restoration on the engine and every single part on the bike, replacing anything that was needed with genuine parts. I have a file of receipts that total just over 13k. I have chopped the tank back, added a cafe tail with a bespoke brown seat made for me by SM Trimming of Lewes. I have had the frame taken back and custom sprayed in a very marmite teal colour which I love. New Hagon rear shocks to achieve the perfect ride height. The decals (rare motorcycle company) I designed myself just to add the one off look. It has a keyless fob start and bespoke wiring and control system that can be seen in the pics, hidden perfectly under rear tail of the seat. This was designed by a friend who works on the euro fighter so it’s bloody good but no missile systems! It’s wired up to plug straight into a discreet optimiser socket for charging and storage.
Having thought it would take me about a year, we worked on the project for 3 years which was an amazing journey to MOT and riding. I’ve kept the original 4 into 1 exhaust which sounds amazing. It’s had a full rolling road dyno and ticks over like e new bike. She’s not been ridden that much over the years but always taken out for a blow through and mot. Currently sorn and sitting under an insulated soft cover in dry storage. I am near Horsham in West Sussex UK so feel free to come and look.
In terms of price it’s so hard as bikes only have a realistic ceiling. I’m not worried by the costs as it was a labour of love and I wanted the best result. So I think if someone loves the look and feel of this bike like I do it’s worth a fair price of £7k or an offer around that.
Honest reason for sale: I’m at that stage where I have too many bikes and I’m just not riding them. I always thought I’d just keep his one to look at but it’s wicked that it’s not being ridden and enjoyed by someone else, plus my wife has told me to get it sold!
